The Fire of Protests Reaches Switzerland

The Fire of Protests Reaches Switzerland

Continuing the wave of “Gen Z” protests across Europe, on the evening of Saturday, 31 October 2026, the Swiss cities of Zurich and Basel saw unauthorised protests and violent clashes. Hundreds of people in the two cities blocked parts of streets by setting up burning barricades from rubbish bins, bicycles and other objects, and police used water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse them.

Hawzah News Agency- According to Zurich police, at around 22:30 several hundred people gathered on Langstrasse, some masked and some in Halloween costumes.

It is significant that the Swiss protesters explicitly compared themselves to youth protests in France and other European countries. Calls with the slogan “Gen Z Takes Responsibility” were also spread on social media—the same slogan used in Germany and France. This resonance shows that young people’s discontent with living costs, education policies and what is called “being ignored” has gone beyond the borders of one country and become a pan-European phenomenon.

Overall, the spread of protests to Switzerland—a country known for political stability and high prosperity—sends a clear message: the cost-of-living crisis and distrust of political institutions are no longer confined to Europe’s crisis economies. If governments cannot give a tangible response to young people’s demands, this wave can become a recurring pattern across the continent—one in which peaceful daytime discontent ends at night in fire, barricades and clashes.
