Thousands of people across New Zealand attended Black Lives Matter protests on Sunday (June 14), with thousands “taking a knee” on Auckland’s Queen Street.
In Auckland and Wellington, protesters gathered and marched on the streets carrying posters that read “Black Lives Matter,” with one protester saying, “To finally be able to speak up about it and to feel like I’m doing something to help, you know, it means a lot.”
Other protesters added that anti-racism was a global issue and not an issue isolated to America.
Anti-racism protests were triggered around the world following the death late last month of African-American George Floyd after a Minneapolis police officer was filmed kneeling on the handcuffed Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.
