Iraqi Cleric: Legal Pursuit of US, Israeli Crimes Must Move from Conferences to Action

Sheikh Yusuf al-Nasiri, a prominent cleric of the Iraqi resistance front, stressed the need for practical pursuit of US and Zionist crimes, saying documentation of crimes, the formation of legal cases and the filing of complaints in domestic and international courts must replace purely theoretical conferences and seminars.

Hawzah News Agency- Sheikh al-Nasiri spoke at a specialized panel on “Strategies for Documenting and Legally Pursuing the Crimes of the American-Zionist Enemy,” held on the sidelines of the Conference of Mujahideen in Exile in the Sheikh Bahai Hall of the Islamic Research Foundation of Astan Quds Razavi, where he stressed the need to turn legal and international capacities into practical action to try the perpetrators of crimes against oppressed nations.

Criticizing the tendency of many legal conferences and meetings to remain limited to presenting views and issuing statements, he stated: “To achieve results, legal activities must move beyond the stage of slogans and dialogue and reach executive measures and sustained follow-up in international judicial bodies.”

The jurist and consultant to international organizations, referring to his experience in international law, including cooperation with bodies such as the Red Cross, said: “Despite numerous conferences and seminars held in Iran on the crimes of the enemies, a significant portion of these programs has not led to practical results or judicial follow-up.”

Sheikh al-Nasiri, stating that since the early years after the martyrdom of General Qassem Soleimani he has called on Islamic Republic officials to pursue the crime legally in domestic and international courts, added: “Legal cases must be formed with the cooperation of the families of martyrs and judicial bodies and pursued through legal channels in various countries.”

Referring to his efforts to gather the families of martyrs of the resistance axis and encourage them to file complaints in the courts of their places of residence, he noted: “Legal pursuit must not be limited to holding meetings and taking commemorative photos; rather, a clear judicial and executive path must be defined for each case.”

The Iraqi resistance activist, referring to Donald Trump’s public admission of ordering the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani and his companions, described these remarks as important documentation for the legal pursuit of this crime, stressing: “The explicit confession of the perpetrators of a crime can be cited in the process of forming a case and proving their criminal responsibility.”

He also referred to the crime of attacking the Shajareh Tayyebeh School, citing remarks by a senior US Navy officer about a warning before the attack on the school, adding: “This officer stated that before the missile was fired, he had warned about the nature of the target location and the presence of students and expressed concern about the attack; nevertheless, a second attack was carried out.”

Sheikh al-Nasiri described these remarks as evidence to be examined in the legal case for this crime and, criticizing the lack of effective follow-up, stressed the need to collect and present documentation to international judicial authorities.

Referring to South Africa’s filing of a complaint against the Zionist regime at the International Court of Justice, he stated: “This action paved the way for other countries to enter and for legal and political support for the complaint against the Zionist regime’s crimes, and showed that judicial pursuit can lead to the formation of international consensus against criminals.”

The Iraqi jurist, referring to global reactions to the crimes in Gaza and the political and international isolation of the Zionist regime, stated: “Recent developments show that public opinion and the positions of many countries have changed toward the crimes of this regime, and this opportunity must be used to strengthen legal action.”

Resistance Front Needs a Strategy Beyond Geographic Borders

Sheikh al-Nasiri, stressing the need for a strategic view of resistance front issues, said: “Regional issues should not be analyzed solely within the framework of countries’ geographic borders, because regional developments are interconnected and a threat against one part of the resistance front can also affect the security of other parts.”

Referring to his warning at a specialized meeting after the October 7 operation about the consequences of Gaza’s fall for Tehran’s security, he noted: “Subsequent developments showed that threats are not limited to one region, and a shared, strategic view within the resistance front must be strengthened to confront them.”

Legal Action Can Complement the Resistance Front’s Military Power

The international law professor, stating that confronting the enemy is not limited to military tools, said: “The capacity of international law and judicial pursuit can play a role in confronting the enemy as much as military tools and even, in some cases, more effectively.”

Referring to his cooperation with international jurists and lawyers from different religions and viewpoints, he added: “Many independent jurists in the world are ready to take a stance against US and Zionist crimes and support legal paths to secure the rights of oppressed nations.”

At the end, Sheikh al-Nasiri called for drafting an executive plan for documenting crimes, forming legal cases, organizing the families of martyrs and pursuing complaints in domestic and international courts, stressing: “The goal of such meetings must be to achieve practical solutions for condemning criminals and defending the rights of oppressed nations.”
