Taiz governor declares humanitarian initiative to protect civilians inside Taiz city

SANAA, Nov. 02 (YPA) – Taiz governor in the Sanaa-based government, Ahmed Al-Masawi, announced on Monday a humanitarian initiative to open roads for garbage trucks and protect the city from environmental disasters.

In a statement to the official Saba News Agency, Al-Masawi said the initiative comes amid worsening environmental conditions and the accumulation of waste in public streets and flood channels.

He also warned that some individuals in central Taiz had been using Taiz University grounds as a dumping site for waste collected from neighborhoods and homes across the city, threatening an environmental and public health disaster and undermining the future of education in the governorate.

“Responding to appeals and calls from Taiz University officials, as well as the city’s sheikhs and community leaders, and to avert environmental disasters or health hazards to residents, the Taiz Local Council, represented by the governor, announces a unilateral humanitarian initiative.

The governor confirmed the readiness of roads previously announced and reaffirmed the availability of the following routes for garbage trucks and transport vehicles to enter and exit the city and reach the main landfill at the Shar’ab Junction, while facilitating residents’ movement and the delivery of their essential needs.

Al-Masawi called on Saudi-backed groups in central Taiz to cooperate and open the following routes:

Al-Nour City – Al-Khamseen – Al-Sittin – Shar’ab Junction Road.

Al-Ashraf Basin – Al-Kamb – Al-Qasr – Al-Hawban – Al-Sittin – Shar’ab Junction Road.

Asifra – Al-Sittin – Shar’ab Junction Road.

The governor reiterated that the initiative stems from a humanitarian and development responsibility and is being coordinated with the relevant authorities. He urged all parties to cooperate to ensure its success.

He also called on those using university grounds and flood channels as dumping sites to stop doing so, warning of the direct threat this poses to the environment, public health and the future of education.

The governor instructed the General Corporation for Cleaning and Improvement to begin preparing the landfill at Shar’ab Junction to receive all waste transported from the city, describing this as a service and duty toward its residents.

Al-Masawi praised the cooperation and positive response of the military authorities in the Fourth Military Region, the governorate’s security authorities and the leadership of the Sanaa-based Ministry of Interior.

He said these authorities had always been among the first to fulfill their duties, noting that their cooperation would help implement the initiative and protect the city from environmental and health risks. He stressed the importance of continued coordination in the public interest.

Addressing possible objections from some parties in central Taiz to accepting an initiative unless it is carried out through the private sector, as had happened with previous humanitarian initiatives proposed since the latest events began, Al-Masawi added that his side remained open to cooperation.

He clarified well-known commercial groups in the province could contribute to implementing the initiative or help persuade the parties concerned to accept its humanitarian nature, stressing that the sole aim was to ease the burden on residents of central Taiz.

Al-Masawi said protecting Taiz from environmental disasters was a collective responsibility and expressed hope that all parties would join efforts to prevent health and environmental harm to the province.
